Mallorca, Island Paradise

For me, Mallorca back in the 1960s was about the closest to a physical paradise you can get.  Mass tourism was in its infancy. Hotels were just beginning to be constructed. The small expat community was just beginning to feel a bit disconcerted about losing their views. Resentment towards an influx of Spanish workers was compensated by hopes of making a fortune out of what the island had to offer for those willing to pay for land and services.

My husband was under-manager in a brand new hotel  close to the beach but still surrounded by woodland and orchard, and for three years we lived first in Andraitx ,where my third daughter’s birth was registered, and then in Paguera. Everything recorded in MOSHIE CAT is a true record of one part of our lives there.

I later wrote two more books with a Mallorcan setting. FEDERICO, a donkey story, was requested by Shirley Hughes, who illustrated the original Moshie Cat, and told me she had always wanted to draw donkeys but hadn’t been offered the opportunity. PATCH, a dog story, rounded off this Mallorcan trilogy.
